Wheeler's Two Tallies Propels Men's Soccer Past Howard, 2-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) scored two goals to lift Mount St. Mary's past Howard 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday.

Wheeler scored in the 27th minute and again in the 54th minute for his second and third goals of the season. The junior, who also scored against Radford on Saturday, has moved into eighth place on the program's all-time career list with 23 tallies. In addition, Wheeler moved into fifth place on the Mount's Division I points list with 50 points.

Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) notched his first collegiate point by assisting Wheeler's first tally for the Mount (1-2) while Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) registered his third assist of the season and 12th of his career. The senior moved into seventh place on the program's Division I list for helpers. Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made three saves in his 13th career shutout.

Larry Turner made three saves for the Bison (1-2) in the loss.

Wheeler scored a marker in each half to lead Mount St. Mary's to its first win of the season.

Ockford kicked a long ball up ahead to Wheeler who then beat a defender and the goalkeeper at the 26:10 mark. In the second half, Detzel served a perfect ball from 35-yards out and hit Wheeler's head who found the back of the right netting at the 53:33 mark.

The match was delayed for 11 minutes after the lights went out in the 33rd minute at Greene Stadium.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday when the squad hosts George Washington. Match time is 1 p.m.
