EMMITSBURG, Md. - Towson defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-0 in the
men's soccer season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at
Waldron Family Stadium.
Senior Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made two
saves for the Mount (0-1) while senior Eric Detzel (York,
Pa./Central York) had three shots in the loss.
Marco Mangione and Zach Hoffer each scored for the Tigers (1-0)
off helpers from Phill Greatwich and Liam Maloney, respectively.
John Steele made two saves in the winning effort.
Despite playing a man down for the final 56 minutes of the game,
Towson found the back of the next in each half to earn its
second-straight 2-0 season-opening win against the Mountaineers.
The Tigers won the 2007 opener by the same score in Towson.
Mangione got the scoring started off a feed from Greatwich at
the 38:49 mark to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Hoffer then sealed the win with his first collegiate goal off a
Maloney assist at 85:33.
Towson outshot the Mount 10-6 in the contest. The Mount's best
chance to score came with 9:42 left in the match. Will Thomas
(Mount Rainer, Md./The Heights) served the ball from the left to
Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) in the
middle and missed the opportunity high. Detzel gave the Mount its
final chance of the night in the 85th minute, but missed wide.
Freshmen Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Patrick
Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) both made their
collegiate debut in the starting lineup while sophomore Koudzo
Komlan (Lome, Togo/Upper Darby [Pa.]) made saw his first collegiate
action off the bench.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against
Radford. Game time is 1 p.m.
