Mary's sophomores Matthew
Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa./Salesianum [Del.]) and
Mike
Salomon (Haymarket, Va./Seton School) each advanced to
the Flight A Singles final at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational
held at the MSM Tennis Courts on campus.
The two-day tournament features Mount St. Mary's, Loyola,
Washington (Md.) and Gettysburg.
Salomon posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Loyola's Pierce Norton in his
first match of the day before rallying to defeat Washington's John
Menzione, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, in the semifinals. Blake defeated
Kristian Wilson (Washington) in his opening match, 6-1, 6-1, before
tallying a 6-3, 6-4 win over Loyola's Keyan Sanai in the
semifinals.
In Flight B singles, sophomore Taylor
Place (Snellville, Ga./St. Pius X) advanced to the
semifinals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gettysburg's Mike McLaughlin,
before falling to Dan D'Agostino of Loyola, 6-2, 8-6 (7-5) in the
semifinal round. Freshman Mike
Zabetakis (Finksburg, Md./Calvert Hall) rolled to a
6-0, 6-0 win in his first match over Tom Gosnell of Gettysburg, but
he was defeated by Loyola's Bobby Gorczakowski, 6-3, 6-4, in the
semifinals as well.
In Flight C singles, Patrick
Plastow (Dushore, Pa./Pennsylvania Home School) downed
Johnny Nelson (Gettysburg), 6-2, 6-1 in his first match before
falling to Loyola's Connor Lisco, 6-1, 0-6, 10-5 in the
semifinals. Andrew
Marinucci (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) advanced to
the semifinals with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Willie Dashiell
(Washington) before falling to Jamie Russo (Loyola), 6-3, 6-3.
The Mount's James
Bartolozzi (Manassas, Va./Seton) won his first match,
6-3, 6-2, over Hunter Scott of Washington in Flight D singles
before falling to Patrick Glaessner (Loyola), 6-1, 6-2. Jastin
Mostowtt (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) fell
6-3, 4-6, 10-8 to Eric Michaelis of Loyola in his first match
before rebounding to down Jack Taylor (Washington), 6-3, 7-6
(7-5).
In Flight A doubles, the Mount's pair of Blake and Place
advanced to the semifinals with an 8-3 win over Gosnell and Brinks
of Gettysburg. Salomon and Zabetakis fell in their match, 8-6, to
Chris Curran and Tom Keegan of Gettysburg.
In Flight B doubles, Plastow and Marinucci moved to the
semifinals with an 8-3 win over Taylor and Scott of Washington. Justin
Olexa (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E.
Stevenson) and Mostowtt were edged in their match, 9-8
(7-5), by Pratt and Fortenbaugh (Gettysburg).
The tournament concludes tomorrow with play beginning at 11:00
a.m.
