BROOKLYN, N.Y. - St. Francis (N.Y.) scored twice in the final 16
minutes to defeat Mount St. Mary's 2-0 in Northeast Conference
(NEC) men's soccer action on Friday.
Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made three
saves for the Mount (5-8-0, 2-3-0 NEC) in the loss.
John Sallhag and Robbie Weir each scored for the Terriers
(4-5-2, 2-2-0 NEC) while Curtis Julien and Paul Benkert shared the
shutout of each playing 45 minutes and making a combined four saves
in the match.
The two teams battled scoreless for 74 minutes before St.
Francis (N.Y.) scored twice in the final 16 minutes to earn its
second-straight win against Mount St. Mary's.
Jeverton De Lorenzi gave Sallhag a lead pass toward the goal and
the senior found the back of the net to hand the Terriers a 1-0
edge at 74:23. Weir sealed the win off a feed from Gabriel Hagot at
the 88:06 mark.
Mount St. Mary's had several of scoring chances on the
afternoon, but could not convert. Chris Wheeler (Newcastle,
Australia/St. Francis Xavier) had a shot saved by Julien and
stopped by the St. Francis (N.Y.) defense in a span of 10 seconds
in the 34th minute. Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a
shot turned away by Julien in the 36th minute before Wheeler was
stopped by the netminder three minutes later.
In the second half, Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) had a
similar chance that Wheeler had in the first half when he had a
shot blocked and then saved by Becnkert in a span of 19 seconds in
the 70th minute.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at Long Island on Sunday.
