HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Jake Wetzel (Blue Ridge Summit,
Pa./Waynesboro Area) and Andrew Lawton (Severna Park, Md./Mount St.
Joseph) both finished tied for fourth as individuals while Ray Hyre
(Bowie, Md./Bowie) placed ninth to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's
golf team to a third-place standing after the first round of the
Holiday Inn Colonials Classic on Monday.
Playing as individuals, Wetzel and Lawton recorded identical
afternoons with a 37 on the first nine holes and a 38 on the back
nine to finish the first round in fourth place with a score of 75,
five strokes behind the current leader. Hyre leads the five Mount
team competitors in ninth place after carding a 37 on the first
nine holes and a 40 on the back nine to finish the day with a
77.
Dan Michalek (Mount Airy, Md./Mount St. Joseph) (10th place,
78), Devin O'Grady (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (13th place,
79), Sage Smith (Denver, Colo./Brophy) (23rd place, 83) and Kevin
Ellison (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) (23rd place, 83) rounded
out the Mountaineers team players. Freshman Ryan Lee (Leonia,
N.J./Leonia) joined Lawton and Wetzel as individuals in the event,
finishing 36th with a score of 89 in his collegiate debut.
Clarion leads the two-day event with a score of 301 while Robert
Morris (304), the Mount (317), Toronto (318), Laval (325), Robert
Morris "Blue" (326) and UMES (349) rounded out the seven-team
field.
Mount St. Mary's concludes the fall slate in the final round of
the Holiday Inn Colonials Classic on Tuesday.
