Howard Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-0

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Howard scored twice in the final 20 minutes to defeat Mount St. Mary's 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday.

Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made one save for the Mount (1-5-0) while Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) had a team-high five shots in the Mountaineers 2009 home debut.

Phillip Borde scored both goals for the Bison (1-4-0) and goalkeeper Victor Thomas registered an assist and four saves in the winning effort.

Howard scored a pair of breakaway goals in the final stanza and held on to end a six-game winless streak against Mount St. Mary's.

Thomas punted the ball to the Bison offensive end and Borde powered ahead and found the left netting to break a scoreless standstill at 71:54. Borde then sealed the win when he notched his second tally of the afternoon at the 85:20 mark for a 2-0 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's outshot the Bison 15-9 in the match and had a flurry of chances in the final 16 minutes, but could not convert against the packed in Howard defense.

Wheeler had his shot saved by Thomas in the 75th minute before Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) (76th minute), Eric Mullins (Finksburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) (80th minute) and Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) (85th minute) each had a shot sail wide prior to Borde's second goal of the afternoon.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action at George Washington in the final non-conference game of the year on Sept. 26. Game time is 3 p.m.
