PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Brad Gerick (Pylesville, Md./North Harford)
and Sage Smith (Denver, Colo./Brophy) each finished in the top five
to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a third-place
standing after the first round of the Rutgers Invitational on
Friday.
Gerick posted a 34 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine
to finish with a one-over par score of 72 in third place, one
stroke behind the current leader. Smith registered a 36 on the
first nine holes and a 37 on the back nine to end the afternoon
with a two-over round of 73 in fifth place.
Dan Michalek (Mount Airy, Md./Mount St. Joseph) (28th place,
79), Brandon Powers (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) (38th place, 80) and
Jeff Kingsbury (North Beach, Md./Northern) (57th place, 83) also
competed for the Mount in the squad's first event of 2009-10.
Rutgers and USC Upstate are tied for the lead after the first
round with a score of 301, three strokes ahead of the Mountaineers
(304) while Central Connecticut State (306) and Monmouth (310)
rounded out the top five teams in the 13-team field. The event
marks the debut of first-year head coach Kevin Farrell.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action in the final round of the
Rutgers Invitational on Saturday.
