LITTLESTOWN, Pa. – Sage Smith (Denver, Colo./Brophy) finished second to help the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a second-place standing after the first round of the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Monday. Dan Michalek (Mount Airy, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and John Rosecrans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) paced the Mount's "B" team with a third-place finish.

Despite the rainy conditions, Smith shot a 34 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine to finish the round with a 70, two strokes behind Matt Krembel of Army, the defending tournament champion.

Michalek and Rosecrans both finish with a 35 on the first nine holes and 37s on the back nine to post a 72, two strokes behind Smith and four strokes behind Krembel.

Brad Gerick (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) also finished in the Top-10 after carding a 76 in the first round to place ninth. Jeff Kingsbury (North Beach, Md./Northern) placed two strokes behind Gerick to finish in 15th place while Tim Evelius (Westminster, Md./Westminster) (31st place, 81) and Jordan Bertoglio (Orange, Calif./Servite) (68th place, 94) also competed for the Mountaineers' "A" team.

Along with Michalek and Rosecrans, Justin Nogay (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) finished tied with Kingsbury for 15th place with a round of 78 while Brandon Powers (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) (51st place, 85) and Steve Crain (Wellsville, Pa./Northern York) (59th place, 89) participated for the "B" team.

Jake Wetzel (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa./Waynesboro Area) (41st place, 83) and Alex Mabin (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck) (53rd place, 86) competed in the event as individuals.

With two-time defending champion Longwood not participating in this year's field, Army leads the event with a score of 295, 10 strokes ahead of the Mount's "A" team (305) and 12 strokes in front of the Mountaineers' "B" team (307) while Fairfield (309) and Bryant (309) rounded out the Top-5 teams.

The event was scheduled to start with 36 holes on Monday, but due to the weather the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational will be a two-round event.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday in the final round of the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational.
