Wheeler's Late Tally Fuels Men's Soccer To 1-0 Victory Against Saint Francis (Pa.)

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) scored in the 79th minute to lift Mount St. Mary's past Saint Francis (Pa.) 1-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Friday.

Steve Pathroff (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) served the ball from the left side of the box into the middle to Wheeler, who found the back of the netting for his fifth goal of the year at the 78:14 mark for the decisive goal.

Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) made two stops for the Mount (4-9-0, 3-3-0 NEC) in the winning effort. After winning two-straight games, the Mountaineers sit in fifth place with nine points in the league standings with four games to play.

Darius Motazed made eight stops for the Red Flash (5-10-1, 1-5-1 NEC) in the loss.

With a consistent rain falling throughout the contest, Wheeler handed Mount St. Mary's the lead it would not relinquish with 11 minutes and 46 seconds remaining to give the Mountaineers its second-straight win against Saint Francis (Pa.).

Mount St. Mary's outshot the Red Flash 19-6, but Saint Francis (Pa.) did have a couple chances to get on the scoreboard and could not convert. David Butler had his shot saved by Davis in the 21st minute and Davis also stopped a Daniel Moir shot in the 62nd minute. Moir gave the Red Flash its final scoring threat, but missed high in the 86th minute.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday at Robert Morris. Game time is 2 p.m.
