EMMITSBURG, Md. - St. Francis (N.Y.) scored in the 11th minute
to defeat Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's
soccer action on Sunday.
Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made three
saves for the Mount (2-9-0, 1-2-0 NEC) while Chris Wheeler
(Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) had three shots in the
loss.
John Sallhag scored the Terriers (5-5-0, 2-1-0 NEC) decisive
goal on the afternoon and Chris Antonino turned away six shots in
the winning effort.
St. Francis (N.Y.) scored early in the first half and held on to
earn the victory and end a two-game losing streak against the
Mountaineers.
Sallhag took a long ball from Javier Gonzalez and found the back
of the netting for his second tally of the season to hand the
Terriers a 1-0 edge at the 10:38 mark.
Mount St. Mary's had several chances to get on the scoreboard,
but could not convert. Wheeler had all three of his shots saved by
Antonino after notching scoring chances in the 38th, 40th and 53rd
minutes of the match. Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder)
had his shot saved in the 27th minute while his brother Gary
Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) was turned away by Antonino in
the 47th minute. Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./ St. Andrews Episcopal
School) gave the Mount its final scoring threat, but was stopped by
Antonino at the 87:52 to preserve the shutout for St. Francis
(N.Y.).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action when the squad heads to
Bryant on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m.
