EMMITSBURG,
Md. Monmouth scored in the 83rd minute to lift the Hawks
past Mount St. Mary's 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's
soccer action on Saturday.
Eric
Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) scored his fifth goal of the season
for the Mount (6-6-0, 2-1-0 NEC) and Chris Davis (Townsville,
Australia/Kirwan State) turned away four saves in the
loss.
Ryan
Kinne scored the game-winner off a pass from Rob LaRocca with seven
minutes remaining to hand Monmouth (8-2-2, 2-0-1) the victory and
to stay unbeaten in the league. Bryan Meredith made three stops in
the winning effort.
Monmouth
got on the scoreboard first when George Quintano kicked the ball
from the far right into the middle near the pipes and found its way
into the the twine off the goalkeeper at 3:21.
Scott
Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) and Chris Wheeler (Newcastle,
Australia/St. Francis Xavier) helped set up the tying goal when
Detzel found the netting at the 25:01 mark.
The score
remaining tied until the 87:00 mark when LaRocca passed the ball to
Kinne in the middle of the field, who found the back of the netting
for the decisive score.
The Mount
had a couple chances in the final three minutes to square the match
at 2, but could not convert. Detzel had a corner kick from the left
sail into Meredith's hands before a Mount player could knock it
into the netting. Eric Mullins (Finksburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph)
gave the Mountaineers their final scoring threat, but missed wide
with 21 seconds remaining.
The
Mountaineers scored in a match against Monmouth for the first time
since the 2004 season.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Oct. 24 at Long Island. Game time is 3
p.m.
