George Washington Rebounds To Upend Men's Soccer In Overtime, 3-2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Washington scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute to down Mount St. Mary's 3-2 in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.

James Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) notched a career-high two goals for the Mount (2-4-1) while Steve Cant (London, England/Greenshaw) and Joshua Barnaby (Takoma Park, Md./Archbishop Carroll) each dished out an assist on one of Zabel's tallies.

Marcus Ranney netted the decisive goal off an Andy Stadler helper for the Colonials (4-3-0), and Greg McKay and Abimola Pedro also found the twine in the winning effort.

George Washington came from behind to score the final two goals of the match, including the golden goal in the first 73 seconds of overtime to take the third meeting in program history against the Mountaineers.

Stadler had his shot stopped, but Ranney was there to knock the reflection into the netting at the 91:13 mark to hand the Colonials a 3-2 victory.

The contest started as a seesaw battle with Mount St. Mary's taking the lead and George Washington responding to tie the game.

Zabel tallied the Mount's first marker on the season in the first half off Barnaby's second assist on the year 5:49 into the match.

McKay answered for the Colonials on a shot from 35-yards out into the right corner at the 18:33 mark.

Zabel then handed the Mountaineers a 2-1 edge going into the intermission off a Cant helper at 31:39.

Similar to the decisive goal in the extra session, Mike Rollings had his shot deflected to Pedro, who knocked in the game-tying goal 2:35 into the final stanza and set up the dramatics in overtime.

After George Washington squared the contest at 2, Mount St. Mary's had two scoring opportunities the rest of the way. Vinnie Berry (Helensburgh, Scotland/St. Patrick's) had his shot turned away by Greg Yahr at 88:51 before Gary Phinith (Gaitersburg, Md./Magruder) had his shot stopped by Yahr 51 seconds into overtime for the first chance of the extra session for either team.

Yahr finished with five saves while Chris Davis (Kirwan, Australia/Kirwan State) made two stops in the first 45 minutes and Will Pike (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) turned away three shots in the final 46:13.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Game time is 4 p.m.
