Late Goal Lifts Mount St. Mary's Women's Soccer Past Merrimack, 2-1

North Andover, Mass. (October 4, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's scored in the 81st minute to post a 2-1 win at Merrimack in Northeast Conference action on Friday afternoon.  Freshman Mikayla Bates notched her first career goal to give the Mountaineers their first NEC win of the season.

Elisabeth Rockhill started the play on the winning goal sending a cross past the far post to Brianna Luongo, who centered the ball to Bates.  The freshman then knocked home the shot to the upper right corner of the goal to put the Mount ahead, 2-1.

The Warriors (2-8-0, 0-4-0) had evened the score in the 52nd minute when Hallie Shears converted a Bridget Austin pass to tie the game at 1-1.

The Mount (2-9-0, 1-3-0 NEC) put the pressure on early in the game, and had a nice scoring opportunity when Bates sent a header just wide five minutes into the contest.  Just over a minute later, Luongo sent a long ball over the Merrimack defense that Rockhill chased down.  The junior then made a nice cut back to the middle, and beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to the right to put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0.

Merrimack held a 16-to-8 edge in shots in the game, including a 9-to-5 margin in shots on goal.  Mountaineer goalkeeper Maggie Barron made eight saves in the victory.  Merrimack keepers Erin Fulton and Megan Langlois split the game with Fulton posting three saves in the first half.  Rockhill led the Mount with four shots in the game.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, October 6, with a road matchup at NEC leader Bryant.  Kick-off for that game is set for 1:00 p.m.
