October 30, 2018--Mount St. Mary's freshman Cheyenna Cook (Bridgewater, N.J.) has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. Cook was a key cog for the Mount defense in the 1-0 win over Bryant last Friday that clinched the team's first NEC playoff berth since 1997.
Cook played a key role on her team's backline that held Bryant to just one shot on goal in the Mount's biggest win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Bryant last Friday that punched the Mountaineers a ticket to the NEC Tournament for the first time in 21 seasons. Cook initiated a set piece, sending a free kick to Jasmine McCree, who collected and sent it to the middle of the box where Sarah Harmon finished for the game's lone goal in the 13th minute. Cook and the Mount defense held strong the rest of the way to post their third clean sheet of the season. The freshman finished the regular season starting 15 games. She will be a key player for the defense when the Mount faces Saint Francis U at 4:00 p.m. in the NEC semifinals at Central Connecticut on Friday.
Cook is the second Mountaineer to win an NEC Rookie of the Week honor this year, joining Maddie Tchou, who won the award on September 5.
