Mount Women’s Soccer Plays to 0-0 Draw with Delaware State

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 24, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's University played to a 0-0 draw in a non-conference women's soccer matchup against Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.

The Mount (3-6-1) outshot Delaware State (0-9-1) by a 22-9 margin in the contest, including 8-2 in the pair of overtime periods. The Mountaineers also held a slight 6-5 advantage in corners.

Midway through the first half the Mount had its first true scoring opportunity of the tilt after drawing a foul just outside the box. Marcella Fegler bent a lefty shot around the wall that was headed for the lower right corner of the net, but Delaware State goalie Leslie Fazio made a diving stop just inside the near post to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half of play, rookie Jasmine McCree nearly found the back of the net for her first career score. Jaylyn Chandler sent a thru ball to a streaking McCree, who worked her way inside the box. McCree's shot from 10 yards out was turned away once again by Fazio.

In the waning minutes of regulation, a potential go-ahead tally from junior midfielder Kayla Hughes was called back due to offsides. Neither team was able to score in the final minutes as the game headed to overtime.

Junior Jenna West fired a pair of shots from inside the box in the opening minute of the first overtime stanza, with the second heading just wide of the far post as the game remained knotted at 0-0.

The Mount's final scoring chance of the contest in the second overtime period also went unanswered. Gianna Pomykacz sent a cross to Fegler, who was stationed about eight yards from goal. Fegler's shot sailed high, and the Mount and Delaware State went on for the 0-0 draw.

Fazio made eight saves in net for the Hornets, while Maggie Barron stopped a pair of shots in goal for the Mountaineers.

The Mount returns to action on Friday, September 27 for the first conference game of the season against LIU Brooklyn at home under the lights at 7 p.m. Live action will be available for free at
