Emmitsburg, Md. (October 2, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's Ubaida Ahmed has been tabbed as a National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Top 10 freshman for the month of September by The Rugby Breakdown.
"Ahmed is small in stature but potent with ball in hand, this Ghana product leads the team in tries scored this season with six. It's no surprise, as Ahmed was tabbed for multiple elite and select side teams during high school, and was one of 10 female high schoolers selected for the English Premiership scholarship earlier this year", reported The Rugby Breakdown.
Second year coach Farrah Douglas had this to say about her standout freshman: "We are lucky to have a player like Ubaida on our roster, she comes to us from the USA High School All American player pool and thus has a solid understanding of our principles of play. Ubaida is by far one of our fastest and most efficient tacklers, and her work rate on and off the ball is one of the highest on the team. She brings great energy and she cerebrally approaches the game. In her short time with the Mount so far, she has demonstrated great leadership as a freshman. Ubaida will continue to be a player to watch over the next four years".
The Mount freshman has scored two tires in three out of the four matches to begin the year, including leading the Mountaineers with two tries and 21 tackles in the 19-15 win over the D1 Independent Navy Midshipmen.
Ahmed and the Mount women's rugby team travel to West Chester for a match on Saturday, October 13.
