RETURN OF MOUNT ST. MARY'S GOLF
Mount St. Mary's University announced the reinstatement of the men's and women's golf teams as NCAA Division I programs in September of 2017. The two programs, which were discontinued following the 2012-13 season, will look to return to prominence in the Northeast Conference (NEC) after earning multiple team and individual accomplishments prior to the discontinuation.
The men's team captured its first NEC Championship in program history in 2012, with a team-record four players finishing among the top-seven in the tournament. The Mountaineers advanced to the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, North Carolina following their conference title run, where they claimed a 13th-place finish.
ABOUT THE MOUNT
This year's Mount men's team consists of six freshmen (Pablo Alonso Rosado, Joshua Brown, Matt Kinsey, Michael Robinson, Jack Snyder and Jack Straub), one sophomore (Ignacio Gomez) and one senior (Nick McCann).
On the women's side, the Mountaineers have a pair of freshmen (Michaila Cheung and Sophia Vargas) and two sophomores (Olivia Gardenhour and Nicole Voci).
AT THE HELM
Kevin Farrell was named the head coach of the men's and women's programs in November of 2017, returning to the same position he held from 2009-12. Farrell began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant on the Mount St. Mary's staff during the 2008-09 season before being promoted to head coach the following year. He led the men's team to its first-ever Northeast Conference Championship and NCAA Regional appearance in program history during his final season en route to earning NEC Coach of the Year honors. During his three seasons as head coach of the Mountaineers, Farrell mentored and developed four NEC All-Conference players and 10 All-Academic performers. Farrell went on for a five-year stint as the head men's golf coach at Bowling Green State University, where he coached five All-MAC performers, one MAC Freshman of the Year and nine MAC Golfers of the Week.
As a student-athlete, Farrell was a standout on the men's golf team at the Mount, serving as team captain for three seasons and earning All-NEC First Team honors during his senior campaign. He holds the Mount program record for lowest 54-hole Northeast Conference Championships score, which he set his senior season.
The women's team returns to action next weekend at the William & Mary Invitational spanning September 8-10 at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia. The men head to the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Connecticut from September 16-18.
