Bowling Dominates Field at Day Two of Stallings Invite
Greensboro, N.C. (Nov. 16, 2019) – The Mount St. Mary's women's bowling team dominated the field at day two of the Stallings Invite at AMF All-Star Lanes in Greensboro, N.C. The Mount went 4-1 on the day with wins over Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, #7 nationally ranked Maryland Eastern-Shore and #15 Delaware State.
The 5,157 Saturday pin-fall for the Mount ranked first in the entire field as the Mountaineers were the only team to eclipse the 5,000 mark. The next closest team was tournament leader and #8 nationally ranked North Carolina A&T with a 4,975.
Monster scoring numbers from sophomores Tamera Stanton and Rebecca Dodson led the way for the Mount. Stanton went 213, 225, 238, 255, and 258 for an 1189 total (237.8 average). Dodson went 206, 226, 245, 216, and 236 for an 1129 total (225.8 average). Sophomores Barbara Hawes (195.8 average), Danielle Milo (189.8) and Ashley Santos (182.2) were also instrumental in the scoring effort.
#21 Mount: 989 | Prairie View A&M: 842
Paced by Stanton's 213, the Mount used a 989-842 win over Prairie View A&M to jump the Panthers in tournament standings to start their strong day.
#21 Mount: 994 | Texas Southern: 874
In a match that was closer than the final score indicated, the Mountaineers finished strong on a pair that featured two different playing lanes. A 226 from Dodson and 225 from Stanton paced the winning effort.
#21 Mount: 1,090 | #7 Maryland Eastern Shore: 1,006
It was a tale of two halves for the Mount, who found themselves over 120-pins behind #7 Eastern Shore with only five frames remaining. MSM rallied with four different players stringing strikes from frames sixth thru tenth to earn the Mountaineers their first win over a top-10 program this season.
#21 Mount: 1,019 | #8 North Carolina A&T: 1,022
The Mount almost made the impossible happen once again, almost completing a 75-pin deficit comeback in the final three frames. Despite the high scores from MSM, including a 255 from Stanton and 216 from Dodson, #8 NCAT would hand the Mount their first and only loss.
#21 Mount: 1,065 | #15 Delaware State: 919
MSM wasted no time getting off to a fast start this time around, putting the Hornets over 100-pins down five frames in and never looking back in a 1065-919 win. Stanton took the first seven strikes before a ten-pin ion the eighth, ending with a 258 game. Dodson would go 236.
"Our mindset after a great day yesterday was, 'Okay, now let's prove we can be even better than that," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "We always strive to be better than the day before, and we will look to continue that trend tomorrow on championship Sunday."
The Mount will play one more traditional match tomorrow against #17 Louisiana Tech before entering bracket play, where the top-four teams will have a chance at the championship title. The Mount currently sits in second, about 200-pins behind NCAT, 150-pins ahead of Eastern Shore, and nearly 300-pins over UAB. Competition will begin at 8:30 AM ET and can be streamed live on the team's Facebook page.
