Emmitsburg, Md. (December 7, 2016) – Maryland Eastern Shore outscored Mount St. Mary's University by nine points in the fourth quarter to close out a 63-52 victory on Wednesday at Knott Arena. Junior center Caroline Hummell paced the Mountaineers with a 16-point performance.
Hummell went 4-of-10 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line for a game-high 16 points, which marked her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season. Grad transfer Mikal Johnson was the other Mountaineer to reach double figures, tallying 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Mariah McCoy scored a team-best 15 points to lead the Hawks, while Ciani Byrom added 13 and Moengaroa Subritzky chipped in with 11. The Hawks shot 42.6-percent (23-54) from the field and outrebounded the Mount by a 36-30 margin.
The Mount led for all but one minute in the first half of play, and held its largest lead, 11-6, with just over two minutes remaining in the first. Dayona Godwin knocked down a late first-half three at the 1:10 mark to give the Hawks their first lead of the half, 21-20, which they took into the break. Johnson paced the Mount with five first-half points, while Kathleen Belanger-Finn and Stacey Koutris added four apiece.
Following a high-scoring third quarter that saw MDES outscore the Mount by one, the Hawks took a slight two-point advantage, 44-42, into the final period of play.
MDES opened a five-point lead, 53-48, early in the fourth quarter, and extended it to 57-50 with 3:20 remaining in the contest. The Mount was held to just two points in the final three-plus minutes on a pair of free throws as the Hawks closed out the 63-52 victory.
Following the win, MDES improved to 4-3 overall while the Mount fell to 2-6.
