Smithfield, R.I. (March 8, 2015) – The seventh-seeded Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start, falling to second-seeded Bryant by a 76-54 final score on Sunday afternoon in the Northeast Conference Quarterfinals at the Chace Athletic Center. Playing in her final collegiate game, senior Jenn Carney (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored a team-best 18 points for the Mount.
The Mount finishes the season with an 8-22 record, while the Bulldogs (22-8) advance to the NEC Semifinals on Wednesday, March 11.
NEC Player of the Year Brianna Rucker posted a game-high 27 points to go with eight rebounds, with Ivory Bailey and Tiersa Winder tallying 15 points apiece to aid Bryant's offense.
After digging out of a 13-point first half deficit, the Mount remained within striking distance until the Bulldogs went on a 19-0 run midway through the second half to pull away with a 65-42 lead.
Both sides struggled to keep possession in the early going with the teams combining for nine turnovers in the first five minutes. Rucker, who scored the first seven points for the home side, helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 17-4 lead halfway through the opening half.
Carney's four-point play with 9:48 left in the half swung some of the momentum back to the Mountaineers and cut their deficit to 17-8.
After Bryant regained a 13-point advantage, the Mount countered with an 8-0 run to trail by just five at 23-18 with 4:26 left before half. Jody Chickey (Bethlehem, Pa.) scored both of her first-half baskets during the stretch. The Mount would climb to within four on two occasions, before Ivory Bailey's old-fashion three-point play with 4.0 seconds to go gave the Bulldogs a 34-27 halftime lead.
The Mount would again close the gap to four in the second half, but suffered a scoring drought that lasted 7:30 as Bryant distanced itself. The Bulldogs drained 12 three-pointers in the game and finished 6-for-9 from distance in the final 20 minutes.
The Mount shot 52.4 percent from the field in the game but was stymied on offense by 27 turnovers. On the other end, Bryant finished 43.1 percent on field goals and held a 34-25 rebounding edge.
