Loretto, Pa. (March 2, 2015) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team closed the regular season with a 90-87 road loss at Saint Francis U on Monday night at DeGol Arena. The Mount secured the seventh-seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament and will face second-seeded Bryant in Sunday's NEC Quarterfinals in Smithfield, R.I. at 1 p.m.
The Mount (8-21, 6-12 NEC) which entered the night averaging 56.2 points per game, netted a season-high 87 points thanks to 50.9 percent shooting.
Five Mount players scored in double figures for the first time this season led by 16 points from senior Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va.). Jody Chickey (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Stacey Koutris (Sandy Spring, Md.) added 12 points apiece with Kathleen Belanger-Finn (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) and Katrice Dickson (Hagerstown, Md.) both scoring 10.
Saint Francis (6-23, 5-13 NEC) was led in scoring by 37 points from senior Alexa Hayward, including 28 in the first half.
In the back-and-forth affair with 20 lead changes and 10 ties, the Mount was plagued by 38 turnovers leading to 50 SFU points off turnovers.
The Red Flash scored the first seven points of the game and held a 12-2 lead just over two minutes in. The Mount clawed back into the game, tying the score at 21-21 on a Brewer three with 12:53 left and taking the lead the following possession on a Brewer layup.
Later in the half with SFU holding a one-point advantage, the Mount went on a 6-0 spurt beginning with a Belanger-Finn layup and ending with a Brewer jumper for a 41-36 lead with 4:09 left before half.
The Mount took a 47-46 halftime lead on a Koutris layup on the final possession.
In the second half, the Mountaineers used a 14-0 run to turn a 66-58 deficit into a 72-66 lead with just under nine minutes to play. The Red Flash quickly responded and regained the advantage despite Hayward fouling out with 6:14 left.
Down the stretch, SFU's Aisha Brock scored a layup and hit two free throws for a three-point lead at 90-87 with 20 seconds left. On the Mount's final offensive possession, Belanger-Finn's potential game-tying three was off the mark.
The Mount dominated the Red Flash on the glass, holding a 53-38 rebounding edge led by a game-high 11 boards from Sarafina Arthur-Williams (Potomac, Md.).
The Mount will now head to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant for the Northeast Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday, March 8.
