Emmitsburg, Md. (February 14, 2015) – Facing Bryant for the second time this week, the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team dropped a 55-53 decision at Knott Arena on Saturday. Junior Sarafina Arthur-Williams (Potomac, Md.) scored all of her team-leading 10 points in the first half and added eight rebounds to lead the Mountaineers.
Mount St. Mary's (7-17, 5-8 Northeast Conference) knotted the score at 53-53 on a layup from Kathleen Belanger-Finn (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) with 15.2 seconds left in the game, but fouled Bryant's Jenniqua Bailey, who hit a pair of free throws with 9.7 seconds remaining for the 55-53 win. The victory helped the Bulldogs (17-7, 10-3 NEC) sweep the regular season series with the Mount.
After a Mount timeout, a contested runner from Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W.Va.) caromed off the rim and out as the clock expired. Brewer finished second on the team with nine points, all on three-point field goals.
For Bryant, Tiersa Winder made three three-pointers and scored a game-high 14 points, while Bailey aided the offense with 12 points and four assists.
In the first half, the Mount held Bryant, which entered Saturday averaging a Northeast Conference-best 73.6 points per game, to just 18 points.
Arthur-Williams dominated the paint in the first half, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to lead all scorers with 10 points.
The Mount sprinted out of the gate and took an 11-4 lead 5:31 into the game on a three-pointer from Jessica Harris (Woodbridge, Va.).
The Mountaineers, which led for 17:21 of the first half, grew its lead to as many as nine on a jumper by Jenn Carney (Drexel Hill, Pa.) with 2:50 left to stretch the advantage to 23-14. Bryant scored the final four points to trim the Mount's lead down to 23-18 heading into the locker rooms. It was the Mount's first halftime lead since a Jan. 24 home win over Saint Francis U.
Bryant opened the second half on a 10-0 run as the Mount's lead evaporated into a 28-23 deficit 3:09 into the half. From there, Kayla Bates (Tyrone, Pa.) sparked an 11-2 run with eight points, including two three-pointers to help the home side retake the lead at 34-30 with 13:36 left.
The Mount led by as many as six points in the second half with 8:05 remaining. Down the stretch however, the lead switched hands three times and the score was also tied another three times.
The Mount was in front at 51-48 with 1:04 showing on the clock. Bryant's Morgan Olander hit a jumper and Winder connected on a three for a 53-51 lead setting up the layup from Belanger-Finn and Bailey's free throws to end the game.
The two sides both finished with 33 rebounds with the Mount shooting 39.6 percent from the field and Bryant finishing at 38.5 percent.
The Mount will look to bounce back with a game versus Sacred Heart on Monday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at Knott Arena.
GAME NOTES: Prior to the game, the Mount honored Jacqueline Brewer with a ceremony for scoring her 1,000th career point earlier this season… Mount St. Mary's record all-time versus Bryant falls to 7-4.
