MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team has won three games in a row and is in a two-way tie for second place in the Northeast Conference with a 3-1 conference record. A win over fourth-place LIU Brooklyn at Barclays Center, home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets, would be the fifth in a row for the Mount against the Blackbirds. Seven different players have scored in double figures for the Mount this season with Jacqueline Brewer leading the way with seven games of 10-plus points.
GAME DETAILS: In the first of two trips to Brooklyn this season, the women's game is the first half of a doubleheader versus LIU Brooklyn at Barclays Center. Both the men's and women's games can be viewed live on NECFrontRow.com.
LAST TIME OUT: Led by 11 points apiece from Sarafina Arthur-Williams and Jody Chickey, the Mount defeated first-place Central Connecticut by a 54-50 final score at Knott Arena on Jan. 12. The Mountaineers shot 43.9 percent from the field, and despite a 56.0 percent mark from the free throw line, made three of their last four free throws to put the game away. Arthur-Williams finished one rebound shy of her third career double-double with a team-best nine boards.
ABOUT LIU BROOKLYN: LIU Brooklyn stumbled to a 0-6 record out of the gate with four of the losses coming at home. In their last nine, however, the Blackbirds have gone 5-4 and are coming off a 77-74 win over Sacred Heart on Jan. 12. A tough defensive team, LIU Brooklyn leads the Northeast Conference in steals per game (11.6) and three-point field goal defense (.276). On the offensive end, Sophie Bhasin is scoring 15.3 points per game, good enough for seventh in the NEC.
The Blackbirds secured the eighth seed in last season's NEC Tournament and were selected eighth out of 10 teams in this year's NEC Preseason Coaches Poll.
LAST SEASON VS. LIU BROOKLYN: The Mount swept the season series versus LIU Brooklyn a year ago. In the first meeting at Knott Arena on Jan. 6, 2014, Jacqueline Brewer hit the game winning three-pointer with 8.8 seconds left to give the Mount a 63-62 win. The Mount rallied from a six-point deficit with 1:52 left to pick up the victory.
In the return trip to Brooklyn on Feb. 8, then-seniors Jessie Kaufman, Sydney Henderson and Kayla Grossett all scored in double figures in a 69-60 win at the Steinberg Wellness Center. The Mount shot 45.6 percent from the field and forced the Blackbirds into 16 turnovers.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LIU BROOKLYN: Mount St. Mary's won its first 23 games versus LIU Brooklyn from 1990-2001. LIU then turned the tables and won 17 of the next 21 meetings. The Mount has won the last four matchups entering Saturday's game and leads the all-time series, 31-17.
BREWER'S COUNTDOWN TO 1,000: With 943 career points, senior guard Jacqueline Brewer is 57 away from becoming the fifth player to reach 1,000 points while playing for eighth-year Head Coach Bryan Whitten at the Mount.
