Emmitsburg, Md. (December 21, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team was handed a 74-49 defeat by Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Knott Arena. Freshman Jessica Harris scored a team-high 12 points for the Mount, which suffered its first home loss of the season.
The Mount (2-8) turned in an efficient shooting effort from three-point range with a 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) clip, but yielded 32 points in the paint to Bucknell (7-3), which shot 26-for-50 (52.0 percent) from the floor.
Bucknell's Claire DeBoer finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and scored a game-high 21 points, while Megan McGurk added 10 points for the visitors.
Senior Jenn Carney, who finished with eight points, knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening four minutes to give the Mountaineers an early 8-4 lead 3:20 into the contest. The Bison responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead, one they did not relinquished the rest of the way.
The Bison led by as many as seven points at two different points during the opening 20 minutes until the Mount clawed back and cut the deficit to just one at 22-21 with 7:49 left before half on Harris' three. Bucknell took its largest first-half lead of nine points on its final possession on a Jacquie Klotz three-pointer before Harris answered with a three of her own as the first half expired to put the halftime score at 32-26 in favor the Bison.
A 17-5 run to open the second half put the Bison up 18 at 49-31 with just under nine minutes gone in the period. The Mountaineers fought to cut the lead down to 12 points on two occasions, but Bucknell was able to bump the lead up to 20 during the last four minutes of the game.
Junior Jody Chickey dished out a team-best four assists to go with 11 points for the Mount, which shot 15-for-53 (28.3 percent) on field goals. On the glass, senior Jacqueline Brewer notched six rebounds to lead the way, while Bucknell held a 42-29 rebounding edge behind seven boards from Audrey Dotson.
The Mount will return to action for a road game at Niagara on Dec. 30 at 5 p.m.
