Emmitsburg, Md. (November 26, 2014) – Jenn Carney scored a season-high 23 points, and Sarafina Arthur-Williams registered her first career double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team to a 73-64 win over Delaware State in Wednesday night's home opener at Knott Arena.
Mount St. Mary's (1-4), which picked up its first win of the season after four road defeats, led for all but 5:41 of Wednesday's home opener versus the Lady Hornets (1-4), which were paced by 23 points from Raven Bankston.
Trailing 52-50 with 8:27 remaining, the Mount rallied with a 9-2 run to take a 59-54 lead before winning the game at the free throw line down the stretch. The Mountaineers went 8-for-8 at the line in the final minute of play and shot 90 percent (18-for-20) from the charity stripe on the night.
In her second career start, freshman Jessica Harris led the Mount's offense in the first half with nine of her career-high 14 points. With the game tied at 10-10 just over five minutes in, Arthur-Williams finished a layup and Harris followed with a three-pointer for a 15-10 advantage with 13 minutes to go before halftime.
The Lady Hornets bounced back, however, and took the lead at 23-22 with 4:21 showing on the first-half clock on an Amber Bogard layup. The Mount regained control of the game with the final eight points of the half, five from Kathleen Belanger-Finn and three from Kayla Bates for a 30-23 halftime edge. Belanger-Finn finished with a solid overall night with nine points, six rebounds and five assists off the bench.
Delaware State hung around in the second half, eventually pulling even at 40-40 on a three from Bankston with 13:10 remaining. The Mountaineers responded with a 10-2 run capped by a Harris three to take an eight-point lead at 50-42.
The seesaw action continued as the Lady Hornets went on a 10-0 run of their own to jump back in front at 52-50 with nine minutes left. Mount St. Mary's retook the advantage at 53-52 on a Carney three on the next possession, a lead the home side did not relinquish the rest of the way.
The Mount outrebounded Delaware State, 44-31, with 19 coming on the offensive glass leading to 19 second-chance points. The Lady Hornets held the shooting edge with a 45.2 percent (28-for-62) night, with the Mount finishing with a 37.1 percent (23-for-62) clip.
Next up, the Mountaineers head to Maryland-Eastern Shore to face the Hawks on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m.
GAME NOTES: With 18 points and 13 rebounds, Sarafina Arthur-Williams is the first Mount player to register a double-double since Jacqueline Brewer posted 10 points and 10 rebounds versus Duquesne in the WNIT on March 21, 2014… Mount St. Mary's evens the all-time series with Delaware State at 1-1… The Mount improves to 26-15 all-time in home openers and 3-5 under Head Coach Bryan Whitten in home openers.
