Mount St. Mary’s Announces ‘Battle for the Books, 2nd Edition’

Emmitsburg, Md. (November 11, 2014) -- The Mount St. Mary's University athletic department will continue its partnership with select Frederick County public and local Catholic elementary schools with the "Battle for the Books, 2nd Edition," which will reward one school with a top prize of $1,000 for their school library and another with $500. Students can earn points for their schools by attending home basketball games at the Mount.

Through the program, students at 21 elementary schools near the Emmitsburg campus will receive ticket vouchers to every men's and women's home basketball game this season. The school with the highest percentage of participation will receive $1,000 for use by the library, with the second-place school receiving the next prize of $500. Each voucher is good for the admittance of the student and one guest.

The participating schools include Emmitsburg, Lewistown, Liberty, Monocacy, Mother Seton, Myersville, New Midway/Woodsboro, North Frederick, Sabillasville, Sacred Heart, St. Francis Xavier, St. John's, St. Joseph's, Thurmont Elementary, Thurmont Primary, Walkersville, Waverley, Whittier, Wolfsville and Yellow Springs.

In last year's inaugural "Battle for the Books," Sabillasville finished as the top public school with an 82.30 participation percentage to take the top prize of $1,000 toward the school library. St. Francis Xavier won the "Catholic Battle for the Books," while Emmitsburg finished in second place in the "Battle for the Books." This year's competition will combine local public and Catholic schools.

Throughout the basketball season, the Mount St. Mary's athletic department will release standings via Facebook (Facebook.com/MountAthletics) and Twitter (Twitter.com/MountAthletics), as well as on the athletics website (MountAthletics.com). Participating schools will be able to monitor their progress through the "Battle for the Books, 2nd Edition!"
