Emmitsburg, Md. (March 17, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team has accepted an invitation to compete in the upcoming Postseason WNIT and will face Duquesne in the First Round on the road in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Friday, March 21, it was announced Monday night. A game time has yet to be determined.
The Mount (19-13) has never played in the Postseason WNIT and is competing in postseason play beyond the Northeast Conference Tournament for the first time since partaking in the NCAA Tournament in 1995. In the midst of its first winning season since 2000-01, the Mount received an automatic berth to the WNIT as the highest-finishing regular season team from the Northeast Conference not playing in the NCAA Tournament.
All of the WNIT games are hosted by participating schools with first-round games opening March 19-21, followed by round two (March 22-25), round three (March 26-28), round four (March 29-31), semifinals (April 2-3), and championship (April 5 at 3 p.m. ET). The championship game will be nationally televised live in HD on CBS Sports Network.
This season, the Mountaineers made it to the NEC Semifinals for the second year in a row and can record their first 20-win campaign since the 1999-00 season with a victory over Duquesne. Seventh-year head coach Bryan Whitten boasts an experienced club with five seniors, including First Team All-NEC Selection Sydney Henderson, who leads the team with 17.2 points per game.
The Mount joins North Carolina A&T (MEAC), Quinnipiac (MAAC) and Stetson (Atlantic Sun) as the only teams to compete in the Preseason and Postseason WNIT this season.
