Emmitsburg, Md. (March 12, 2014) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team ended its run in the Northeast Conference Tournament with a 68-63 loss in Wednesday night's semifinal matchup versus third-seeded Saint Francis U at Knott Arena. Jacqueline Brewer led the Mount on offense with 16 points on the night.
Playing their first home NEC Semifinal game since 1996, the second-seeded Mountaineers (19-13) worked the entire second half to try to erase a 16-point deficit, cutting the lead for the Red Flash (15-16) down to one at 64-63 with 20 seconds remaining. The Mount did not score the rest of the game as Saint Francis made 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to move onto the NEC Championship Game on Sunday to face top-seeded Robert Morris.
Sydney Henderson finished as the Mount's second-leading scorer with 13 points, while Jenn Carney added 10 points off the bench. Three Saint Francis players scored in double figures with Alexa Hayward compiling a game-high 20 points on 6-of-16 shooting, including a 5-of-10 clip from long range.
Trailing 51-35 with 12:31 remaining, the Mount used a 9-0 run that spanned 1:30 of game clock to cut the deficit to just seven at 51-44. The stretch, which began with a Carney layup, was capped by a three from Brewer that got the home crowd back in the game.
Saint Francis built its lead back up to 12 at 58-46, before a layup from Henderson and a three from Ashley Christie in the left corner made it 58-51 in favor of the Red Flash.
Still down by eight with two minutes left, Christie's free throw and Henderson's layup had the Mount down 64-59 with 52 seconds left. The Mountaineers concluded the 7-0 run with Brewer's layup with 20 seconds remaining.
The Mount's only lead on the night came 3:48 into the game on a Rachel Mathews' layup for a 4-3 lead. The edge was short-lived with Saint Francis knocking down three-pointers on consecutive possessions for a 9-4 advantage. SFU shot 8-of-21 from three-point range on the night.
Brewer connected on a three for the Mount with 6:46 showing on the first-half clock to trim the Red Flash's lead to 18-16, but SFU bounced back to grow its lead to 27-19 with 2:51 to go before half.
The Mount closed with six of the half's final eight points and trailed, 29-25, through 20 minutes.
The Mount, which was out rebounded by a 40-34 margin, was led on the glass by Christie with a season-high nine rebounds. The senior guard also posted team-highs for assists with five, while tying for the team lead with three steals. As a team, the Mountaineers shot 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) on field goals on the night.
GAME NOTES: The Mount was playing its seventh NEC Semifinal game at home on the day… The Mount falls to 19-20 in NEC Tournament games and 9-7 at Knott Arena in the NEC playoffs…. Saint Francis leads the all-time series, 30-27.
