Mount St. Mary's Inaugural 'Battle for the Books' Concludes This Weekend

Emmitsburg, Md. -- The Mount St. Mary's athletic department's inaugural "Battle for the Books" benefiting select Frederick County elementary schools will conclude this weekend with the final two regular season home basketball games. The school finishing with the highest percentage of attendance this season earns their library the top prize of $1,000 with $500 going to the runner-up.

Throughout the basketball season, students from 20 elementary schools near the Emmitsburg campus were given ticket vouchers to every men's and women's home game this season. Students who turn in vouchers earn percentage points toward the top prize. In two separate competitions, 15 public schools have been competing against each other for highest attendance rate, while five Catholic schools are also squaring off.

With two games left, Sabillasville leads the public schools with an attendance participation of 73.45 percent, while St. Francis Xavier is in front of the field among Catholic schools with 8.91 percent.

The Mount's two remaining regular season men's basketball games are Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. versus Sacred Heart and Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. versus Saint Francis U.
