Loretto, Pa. (January 20, 2014) – The Mount women's basketball team trailed by six with 3:43 to play on Monday night, but Saint Francis U closed the game on a 13-4 run to pull away and hand the Mount an 81-66 road loss at DeGol Arena. Jessie Kaufman scored a team-high 17 points to lead four Mount players in double figures.
The Mount (8-10, 3-3 NEC) handled the full-court pressure from the Red Flash (5-12, 3-3 NEC) for most of the night, committing just 11 turnovers, which was the fewest since a nine turnover game at Boston College on Jan. 1. The Mountaineers struggled shooting the ball, however, finishing with a 19.2 percent clip (5-of-26) on three-pointers on the night. The Mount entered the game shooting 41.0 percent from beyond the arc in Northeast Conference play.
In addition to Kaufman's 17 points, Sydney Henderson added 16 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Jacqueline Brewer secured 13 points and four steals. Jody Chickey's 10 points off the bench gave the Mount its second game in NEC play with four double-digit scorers.
Two Saint Francis players notched double-doubles with Alli Williams picking up a game-high 25 points to go with 10 boards, and Rebecca Keegan scored 12 points and corralled 11 rebounds off the bench. Five SFU players scored double-digit points.
The Mount built an early 9-3 lead with 16:47 to go in the opening half on back-to-back Grossett jumpers. The Red Flash's 11-2 run over the next 3:30 put the home side in front at 14-11.
Later in the half, the Mountaineers dug themselves an eight-point deficit with 8:31 on the clock, giving Saint Francis a 24-16 lead on Alexa Hayward's three-pointer. Seven quick points put the Mount down just one at 24-23 with 6:10 to go in the half, but that was as close as the Mount would get the rest of the way.
The Mount trailed at the half, 38-34, and the Red Flash was able to build a 57-44 advantage with 13:13 left in the game. The Mount gained momentum, and two Henderson free throws cut the deficit to 68-62 with just under four minutes remaining. After Kaufman's jumper put the score at 73-66 with 1:21 to go, Saint Francis made six free throws and a layup to ice the game.
Defensively, the Mount picked up nine steals for the second-consecutive game. Saint Francis outrebounded the Mount, 46-38, and scored 36 points in the paint to the Mount's 28.
On the night, the Mount shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, while the Red Flash turned in a shooting percentage of 45.6 percent (31-of-68).
The Mount returns to Knott Arena to face Bryant on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m.
