Mount Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph's, 85-57, in Season Opener

Philadelphia (November 8, 2013) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team could not overcome a hot shooting night by Saint Joseph's, which shot 50.9 percent from the field, as the Mount took an 85-57 loss on Friday in the Preseason WNIT First Round and the season opener for both teams.

The Mount (0-1) finished with three players scoring in double figures including 21 from Sydney Henderson, 13 from Jessie Kaufman and a career-high 10 from Jody Chickey off the bench. The Hawks (1-0) were paced by five double-digit scorers led by 17 from Sarah Fairbanks.

The Mount dug itself an early 17-1 hole 4:47 into the game. The rest of the way in the opening half, the Mount attempted to chip away at the Hawks' advantage with a jumper from Henderson as well as three-pointers by Kayla Grossett and Kaufman for a 12-point deficit at 21-9 with 12:31 left in the first half.

The two sides then traded baskets over the next three minutes with the Hawks leading 25-13 with 9:07 to play in the opening 20 minutes. Saint Joseph's then used a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to break the game wide open for a 34-15 advantage.

After a 6-0 run sparked by two Rachel Mathews layups, the Hawks went on a 12-0 run to take a 46-21 lead and held a 51-28 advantage into the locker room. Henderson led the Mount with seven first-half points. As a team, Saint Joseph's shot 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from the field in the first half.

Henderson began the second half with the Mount's first five points on a three-pointer and two free throws. SJU took its largest lead of the game at 30 points with a 64-34 lead with 12:39 remaining on the clock.

A 14-3 run helped the Mountaineers get to within 18 points with a 66-48 deficit with 9:10 to play, but the visitors would get no closer as the Hawks continued to shoot well from the field. During the stretch, Kaufman drained a three then connected on two free throws to begin the run, and ended the stretch with a rebound and a layup.

Saint Joseph's turned up the offensive pressure and was able to grow its lead back up to 29 over the next seven minutes and held on the rest of the way for the 85-57 win.

SJU outscored the Mount, 34-16, on points in the paint and held a 28-19 advantage on points off the bench. On the glass, the Hawks grabbed 39 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end, to the Mount's 25 total on the night. Chickey led the Mount with five rebounds, while Fairbanks racked up five for the Hawks.

The Mount was able to force 12 Saint Joseph's turnovers but committed 17 on the other end.

With the loss, the Mount heads to the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT. Games are Nov. 15-16 with opponents and locations to be determined. Next on the schedule, the Mount hosts Davidson at Knott Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
