Mount Selected Third in NEC Preseason Poll; Henderson Named Preseason All-Conference

Brooklyn, N.Y. (October 22, 2013) -- Mount St. Mary's guard Sydney Henderson earned preseason All-Northeast Conference recognition, while the Mountaineers placed third in the annual NEC women's basketball preseason coaches poll, announced Tuesday at NEC Social Media Day at the Barclays Center.

The third-place selection is the best in Head Coach Bryan Whitten's seven-year tenure for the Mount, which is one year removed from the team's first NEC semifinal berth since 2001. Individually, Henderson became the first Mountaineer to secure a spot on the five-player preseason All-NEC team since Tiffany Green in 2005.

With five first-place votes, Robert Morris was tabbed as the preseason favorite followed by Sacred Heart in second place with three top votes. The Mount, which received one first-place vote, took third and exceeded the team's previous best selection under Whitten of seventh place in 2008 and 2012.

Saint Francis U picked up the final top vote and finished fourth in the poll, followed by Central Connecticut State and St. Francis Brooklyn in fifth and sixth, respectively. Bryant and LIU Brooklyn went seven and eight, while Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner rounded out the poll.

Henderson is one of two returning starters for the Mount this season. The guard from Richmond, Va. led the Mount in scoring and rebounding in 2012-13, placing ninth in the NEC with 13.1 points per game and 10th with 6.0 rebounds per game.

Henderson is joined on the preseason All-NEC team by Gabrielle Washington of Sacred Heart, as well as unanimous selections Naana Ankoma-Mensa from Bryant, Artemis Spanou of Robert Morris and Saint Francis U's Ali Williams.

The Mountaineers went 15-16 last season, highlighted by the program's first win over a Big East opponent (Seton Hall) since moving to Division I in 1988-89 and an upset of third-seeded Monmouth in the NEC Quarterfinals.

The Mount begins the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 at Saint Joseph's in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
