Mount St. Mary's Clinches NEC Playoff Berth with 51-39 Win over LIU Brooklyn

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 25, 2013)--Tara Lonergan and Sydney Henderson each scored 10 points to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 51-39 win over LIU Brooklyn on Monday night.  With the win, the Mount clinched a spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament.

After a sluggish start to the first half, the Mount scored five points in the final minute to take a 19-17 lead at the half.  Jessie Kaufman drained a three-pointer and Henderson scored a basket in the paint to give the Mountaineers (13-14, 9-7 NEC) their only lead in the opening half.

An 11-4 run to start the second half gave the Mount a 32-23 advantage with 14:08 remaining.  Jacqueline Brewer started the run with a three-point basket.  Rachel Mathews and Lonergan added buckets ahead of a pair of Henderson buckets as the shot clock was about to expire for the nine-point lead.

From there, the Mount methodically pulled away, stretching the lead to 46-30 with 3:58 left on a Brewer three-point basket.

Henderson finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in a solid all-around game.  Lonergan chipped in 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Brewer added nine points on three three-pointers.  Kayla Grossett added eight points off the bench for the Mountaineers as well.

Tamika Guz led LIU Brooklyn (6-21, 3-13 NEC) with 12 points.

The Mountaineers clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament with the win, and are currently in fifth place in the standings.  The top eight teams qualify for the NEC Tournament while the top four earn home games.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, March 2, with a 2:00 p.m. game at Fairleigh Dickinson.
