December 5, 2018--A trio of Mountaineers earned Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field honors this week. Kayla Barnes (Baltimore, Md) was named the NEC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, Rene Rosso (Winchester, Va.) the NEC Women's Rookie of the Week, and Lewis Kungu (Bear, Del.) the NEC Men's Rookie of the Week for their performances at the season-opening Navy Winter Invitational.
Barnes, a sophomore sprinter who claimed the NEC Indoor Most Outstanding Rookie honor last February, took the league lead in the 400m dash while also recording the second-fastest 60m time on the conference's early-season performance list. She completed the 400m dash in 58.19, which was good for fourth place at the meet. In the 60m dash, Barnes clocked in at 7.69. The time, which placed her fifth at Navy, surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for the ECAC Championships.
Rosso leapt to the Northeast Conference lead in the high jump while contesting at the Navy Winter Invitational. The first-year Mountaineer jumped 1.63m (5' 4.25") during her first-ever collegiate competition. Rosso, who cleared the bar on her first attempt at the height, finished in a tie for third place at Navy. She enters the season's second week with a three-centimeter advantage over the NEC's second-ranked high jumper.
Kungu's collegiate debut resulted in a pair of NEC top times. The first-year Mountaineer sprinted his way to the league lead in the 60m and 400m dashes at the Navy Winter Invitational. Clocking in a 6.89, Kungu won his 60m dash heat and took third place overall out of 27 finishers. The time puts the Mount rookie is a tie for 10th place on the list of automatic IC4A Championship qualifiers. Although he finished shy of the IC4A qualifying standard at the 400m distance, Kungu won his heat in Annapolis. The 49.83 mark he recorded tops the Northeast Conference after one week of competition.
