June 18, 2018—Mount St. Mary's rising sophomore Will Merritt (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) qualified for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Under 20 World Championships with his performance in the 10,000m run on Saturday at the United States Track & Field (USATF) Junior Outdoor Championships held at Hayes Track at the Haugh Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
Merritt finished in fourth place at the meet with a time of 33:16.42 under extremely hot and humid conditions. He was the only runner in the meet to have met the IAAF World Junior standard, which earned him at invitation to the IAAF Under 20 World Championships. Merritt met the IAAF World Junior standard in the 10,000m run with a time of 30:53.38 at the IC4A Championships on May 12, and he will be the only American competing in the 10,000 at the meet. The IAAF Under 20 World Championships will be held on July 10-15 in Tampere, Finland.
Rising sophomore Kayla Barnes (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) also competed at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, finishing in 12th place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.71 seconds. Her school record time of 23.97 in the 200m at the Colonial Relays on April 6 was also good enough to hit the IAAF World Junior standard. For Barnes to advance to the IAAF Under 20 World Championships, she would have had to finish in first or second place.
