April 10, 2018--The Mount St. Mary's outdoor track and field team won four Northeast Conference weekly honors, announced today. Senior D.J. Workcuff collected men's Field Athlete of the week honors, junior Erin Sample was named the women's Field Athlete of the week, and freshman Kayla Barnes was named the women's Track Athlete and Rookie of the Week.
Workcuff, the NEC leader in the long jump, competed in the decathlon at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif., this past weekend. Workcuff posted the highest decathlon score of his career (6,264) that included a pair of standout performances in the jumps. Workcuff had a mark of 7.17m (23' 6.5") in the long jump while clearing 1.93m (6' 4") in the high jump, the fifth-best mark on the NEC performance list this year. Workcuff led the decathlon after the first day of competition. It is his second weekly honors this outdoor season.
Barnes posted the top times in the Northeast Conference in both the 100m and the 200m with her performance at the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary. She finished in second place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.87 seconds. She then broke the Mount's school record in the 200m with a mark of 23.97 seconds, the top time in the NEC and the seventh-fastest on the ECAC Championships qualifying list. This is the second time this outdoor season that Barnes has been named Rookie and Track Athlete of the Week in the same week.
Sample won the shot put at the Colonial Relays with a mark of 13.94m (45' 9") on Saturday. The junior is now second on the NEC leader board and is ranked 19th overall on the ECAC qualfying list.
