February 7, 2018--Mount St. Mary's senior Brenden Chavis and freshman Kayla Barnes captured Northeast Conference Indoor Track and Field Weekly honors. Chavis was named the NEC Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week while Barnes takes home NEC Rookie of the Week honors.
Chavis made it back-to-back NEC Field Athlete of the Week honors with a throw of 17.16m (56' 3.5") in the weight throw in the Gold Division at the Akron Invitational. Chavis, the 2017 NEC champion in the weight throw, is the only NEC athlete to top 17.00m in the event this season.
Barnes posted the top times in the NEC in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash at the Akron Invitational this past weekend. In the 200m, Barnes took home first place with a time of 24.73 seconds, taking 0.20 seconds off her NEC-leading 200m time. In the 60m dash, she became the first NEC sprinter to earn a spot at the ECAC Championships with her time of 7.71 seconds in the preliminary round. That mark moves Barnes into third place on the Mount's all-time top 10 list.
The Mount track and field teams will next compete at the 2018 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
