Tommy Gruschow wins 5,000m run to pace Mount Track teams at NEC Championships

West Long Branch, N.J. (May 5, 2013)—Tommy Gruschow won the 5,000m run to pace the Mount St. Mary's men's and women's track and field teams on the final day of the Northeast Conference Championships on Sunday.  The Mount women's team finished in sixth place while the men finished in seventh.

Monmouth cruised to the women's title with 218 points, followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) (86), Sacred Heart (83), LIU Brooklyn (76), Robert Morris (69), Mount St. Mary's (61), Central Connecticut State (55), Quinnipiac (46), St. Francis (N.Y.) (35), Wagner (33), Bryant (29) and Fairleigh Dickinson (26).

On the men's side, Monmouth won the title with 173 points, followed by LIU Brooklyn (131), Robert Morris (122), Central Connecticut St. (91), Sacred Heart (70), Wagner (60), the Mount (48), St. Francis (N.Y.) (35), Saint Francis (Pa.) (35), Fairleigh Dickinson (35), Bryant (19).

Gruschow won the 5,000m in a time of 14:51.56 to earn first-place honors with teammate Chris Swisko finished in sixth place with a time of 15:07.82.

Earlier in the day, Swisko finished second in the 1,500m run with a mark of 3:54.17 while Gruschow was sixth with a mark of 3:57.36.  Kody Wilson was sixth in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.27.  Sean Caskey finished in third place for the Mountaineers in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:28.72.  Tim Nickas finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.25m (13' 11.25").

For the women, Genamarie McCant finished third in the 400m dash (55.99) and fifth in the 200m dash (25.66).  Desi Scott finished eighth in the 800m run.  Helena Leyrer was fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.84) and fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:01.88).  The 4x400m relay team of Katie Crumbaugh, Leyrer, Scott and McCant finished fourth with a time of 3:51.87.  Teika Robinson placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.28m (37' 0.25").  Allie Donahue was eighth in the hammer throw.
