Emmitsburg, Md. (April 27, 2019)--Kate Wade belted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 4-3 win over visiting Central Connecticut in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mount completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory in game two. The Mountaineers improve to 24-25 overall and 8-6 in the Northeast Conference with the wins.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 4, Central Connecticut 3
Kate Wade sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field to lead off the bottom of the seventh to send Mount St. Mary's to a 4-3 win over the Blue Devils in the opening game of the doubleheader. Wade finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI to pace the Mount to the victory. Amanda Berkley tossed a complete-game to pick up the victory.
CCSU (15-20, 2-8 NEC) tallied a run in the top of the first to take the lead. Rian Eigenmann walked, and then stole second base. Syndey Bolan then lofted a wind-aided base hit to right field to put runners on the corners, and Kristen Ulmer singled home Eigenman with the first run of the game.
The Mount responded with a two-out rally in the second to take a 3-1 lead. With Jessica Nines at second with two outs, Wade singled to left to even the score. Kaylee Stoner followed with a two-run homer to center field to give the Mount a two-run advantage. CCSU took advantage of a pair of Mount errors to even the score in the top of the fourth. Giuliana Hathaway singled, and then Alicia Bertolino reached on an error to put runners on first and second with two outs. Eigenmann then saw her fly ball to center dropped, allowing Hathaway to score. Carli Backlund followed with a base hit to tie the game at 3-3. The score remained tied until Wade's walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
Berkley allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out seven in the complete-game victory. Heinze went 2-for-3 at the plate to join Wade as Mount players with multiple-hit games.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 2, Central Connecticut 1
The Mount completed the sweep with a 2-1 win in game two. Morgan Alisauckas scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on a Mariah Godde squeeze bunt to propel the Mount to the win. Berkley picked up the victory, allowing one run and one hit in four innings of work.
The Mount took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Stoner singled, moved to second on a Godde bunt, and then scored on an Alisauckas two-base hit. CCSU opened the fourth with back-to-back singles against Mount starter Katie Olson, but Berkley came on in relief to escape the jam without any damage. Bertolino then tied the game when she led off the fifth with a solo home run. It is the lone hit that Berkley allowed in her four-inning relief appearance.
Mount St. Mary's grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Stoner hit a one-out triple to right center field to set the table for Godde, who executed a perfect squeeze that saw Stoner slide home ahead of the throw from CCSU pitcher Ashley Antonazzo.
Stoner went 2-for-4 while scoring both runs for the Mount in the win while Emilee Kirk was 2-for-3 with a two-base hit. Olson did not allow a run in three innings, striking out five. Berkley improved to 13-13 on the season with the victory.
Notes: The Mount finished 7-1 at home against NEC opponents, and 13-5 at home overall...Pitcher Amanda Berkley improves to 10-1 at home this season...This is the Mount's first sweep against CCSU since winning both games of a twinbill on April 26, 2009...The Mount is now 18-24 all-time against the Blue Devils.
