Mount Softball Hosts Maryland Eastern Shore for Home Opener on Wednesday Afternoon

The Mount softball team will play its home opener on Wednesday when Maryland Eastern Shore visits Our Lady of the Meadows Field for a doubleheader.  The Mount has won three of its past four games to move to 7-12 on the season.

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount defeated Albany, 9-4, on Saturday at the Pirate-Spartan Classic to move to 7-12 on the season.  The Mountaineers have won three of the past four games, and went 4-6 on their 10-game spring trip.  Shelbee Holcomb continues to swing a hot bat, and she leads the team with a .447 average.  Morgan Alisauckas is hitting .375 with seven doubles and 14 RBI while Lindsay Heinze is hitting .355 with five home runs and a team-high 15 RBI.  Katie Olson (2-1, 3.41 ERA), Amanda Berkley (2-7, 3.50 ERA) and Avery Neuhart (2-2, 4.60 ERA) have handled the majority of the pitching duties for the Mount this season.

ABOUT MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE: Maryland Eastern Shore is 1-7 this season after going 1-3 at the Gardner-Webb Tournament on March 2 and 3.  Jordan Kelly leads the team with a .471 average while Kiana Peterson is hitting .385.  Nasya Goodman is 1-4 with a 7.71 ERA in six appearances to pace the pitching staff.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Mount St. Mary's holds a 7-0 lead in the all-time series with Maryland Eastern Shore.  This will be the first meeting between the teams since the Mount posted a 9-8 win on March 20, 2011.  The Mount is 6-0 all-time at home against the Hawks, sweeping a doubleheader on April 23, 2008, in the last matchup at the Mount's Our Lady of the Meadows Field.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Junior Shelbee Holcomb has been named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Holcomb paced the Mount with a .533 average (8-for-15) with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI in five games.  She went 5-for-7 in the Mount's split at Hampton while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the win over Morgan State.  She hit .560 during the Mount's 10-game spring trip, and leads the team with a .447 average this season.  She is the 10th Mountaineer all-time to earn a Player of the Week award, and the first since Lindsay Heinze won the award on March 5, 2018.

SPRING TRIP NUMBERS:  The Mountaineers went 4-6 on a 10-game spring trip last week.  Shelbee Holcomb hit a team-best .560 (14-for-25) on the trip while Kaylee Stoner hit .344 with seven runs scored.  Catcher Jessica Nines had a solid week as well, hitting .318 while throwing out seven base stealers.  In the circle, Katie Olson was 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA in seven appearances while Amanda Berkley went 1-3 with a 2.82 ERA and one save in six appearance. 

PRESEASON POLL:  The Mount was tabbed to finish in seventh in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.  Sacred Heart was the unanimous pick to win it all, followed by LIU Brooklyn, Saint Francis U, Central Connecticut, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, the Mount, Wagner and Robert Morris.  The Mount finished tied for sixth in the NEC standings last year with a 7-9 league record.

HEAD COACH ANNA NAGRO:  Nagro is in her ninth season at the helm of the Mount softball program, the longest tenure by a head coach in the history of the program.  Nagro has led the Mount to 37 wins over the past two seasons, including 20 in 2017, the most by a Mount team since the 2010 campaign.

UP NEXT:  The Mount is back in action on Wednesday, March 13, with the home opener against Maryland Eastern Shore.  The doubleheader starts at 2:00 p.m.
