Hampton, Va. (March 8, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's rolled to a 12-4 win over Morgan State at the Pirate-Spartan Classic today. The Mount was buoyed by an eight-run second inning to earn the victory.
The Mount (6-12) sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive eight-run second inning. Lindsay Heinze started the scoring with a solo home run, her fourth homer on the year. Mariah Godde walked, and stole second to set the table for Emilee Kirk, who doubled home Godde to put the Mount ahead, 2-0. Kate Wade reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and Jessica Nines gave the Mount a three-run lead with an RBI single. After Kaylee Stoner moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt, Kirsten Mumma walked to load the bases for Shelbee Holcomb, who singled to right to bring home a run. Morgan Alisauckas followed with an RBI single, and Heinze walked with the bases loaded to give the Mount a 6-0 lead. Godde completed the scoring with a two-run single.
After Morgan State (1-11) got a run back, the Mount added a pair of runs in the fourth. Holcomb led off with a double, and she came home to score when Alisauckas reached on a Morgan State error. Kirk scored Alisauckas with an RBI base hit.
Holcomb added an RBI groundout and Alisauckas an RBI base hit in the fifth as the Mount closed out the victory in five innings.
The Mount had four players record two hits each in the win. Nines was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Kirk 2-for-3 with two RBI while Holcomb and Alisauckas each went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Avery Neuhart picked up the complete-game victory, allowing three earned runs in five innings.
The Mount completes its spring trip tomorrow against Albany at the Pirate-Spartan Classic with a 9:00 a.m. matchup.
