Hampton, Va. (March 7, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's split a doubleheader at Hampton on Thursday afternoon. Shelbee Holcomb and Morgan Alisauckas each went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Mount to a 7-3 win in the first game. Hampton rebounded to take a 5-4 win in game two.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 7, Hampton 3
Holcomb and Alisauckas each went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Mount softball team to a 7-3 win in game one. Amanda Berkley tossed a complete-game, allowing three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts.
Hampton took the early lead when Brianna Anderson tripled with two outs in the bottom of the first, and came home to score on a Janae Lyles base hit.
The Mount (5-12) got the run back in the top of the second inning. Holcomb led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored when Maggie Kane singled through the left side of the infield.
Mount St. Mary's took the lead with four runs in the top of the third. Mariah Godde led off with a double, and Kaylee Stoner followed with an RBI single. Alisauckas and Lindsay Heinze each singled to load the bases for Holcomb, who came through with a single to left to score a pair of runs to make it 4-1. Heinze later scored after Kane grounded out to the pitcher for a four-run advantage.
Hampton (8-4) cut into the Mount lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it 5-3, but Alisauckas added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
Alisauckas went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in the win while Holcomb went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Heinze added two hits as well for the Mountaineers in the game.
GAME 2: Hampton 5, Mount St. Mary's 4
The Mount was edged in game two, 5-4. The Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to rally for the 5-4 win. Holcomb paced the Mount offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Mount St. Mary's scored in the top of the first on a Holcomb RBI single. Stoner and Alisauckas each singled to put runners in scoring position for the Mount in the inning. Hampton answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a Taylor Warrick solo home run and a Daniella Milloy RBI single. The Mount evened the score in the top of the second. Jessica Nines was hit by a pitch, and Kirsten Mumma followed with a bunt single. Stoner then singled home Nines to even the score at 2-2. Warrick answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to put Hampton back on top, 3-2.
The Mount took the lead in the fifth when Holcomb singled and Emilee Kirk reached on an error. After a Kane sacrifice bunt, Nines reached on an error with both runners scoring to put the Mount on top, 4-3. Hampton scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Milloy, who came through with a single to even the score. Camille King then put the Pirates ahead with a base hit.
UP NEXT: The Mount plays Morgan State at the Pirate-Spartan Classic at Hampton tomorrow at 12:15 p.m.
