Deland, Fla. (March 3, 2019)--Mount St. Mary's scored five times in the top of the seventh to rally for a 9-8 win over Stetson at the Hatter Classic on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Mount was edged by North Dakota, 6-5. Shelbee Holcomb had five hits on the day to pace the Mount offense. The Mount is 4-9 on the season.
Game 1: North Dakota 6, Mount St. Mary's 5
Shelbee Holcomb went 3-for-3 while Kaylee Stoner had a go-ahead bases-clearing triple, but the Mount St. Mary's softball team fell to North Dakota, 6-5, Sunday morning.
The Mount scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 advantage. In the second, Lindsay Heinze singled, moved to second on an Emilee Kirk sacrifice, and scored on a Holcomb base hit to center. In the third, Stoner reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout, and came home to score on a Heinze single to short.
North Dakota scored four times in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Jocelyn Kirk and Marina Marzolino had back-to-back RBI singles. An error led to the go-ahead run, and Angel Love's RBI single made it a 4-2 game.
The Mount rallied to take the lead in the top of the fourth. Holcomb singled through the left side to start the rally. Lexi Donovan and Godde walked to load the bases for Stoner, who tripled to the gap in left-center field to score all three runners for a 5-4 lead. Kirk gave North Dakota the 6-5 lead when she hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Mount had the tying run on second in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not get the runner home. In the seventh, Kirk doubled with two outs, and Holcomb was walked intentionally to put runners on first and second. North Dakota got the final out on a grounder to second to earn the win.
Holcomb was 3-for-3 with a run scored while Heinze added two hits in the game. Katie Olson started, allowing four runs (two earned) in three innings of work. Amanda Berkley took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of relief.
Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 9, Stetson 8
The Mount scored five times in the top of the seventh innning to rally for a 9-8 win over Stetson this arfternoon. Shelbee Holcomb's two-run single brought home the winning runs.
Trailing 8-4 heading into the top of the seventh, the Mount loaded the bases when Jessica Nines was hit by a pitch, Kate Wade singled, and Kaylee Stoner singled. Lexi Donovan then came through with a two-run single to left to cut the deficit to 8-6. Morgan Alisauckas reached on an error to load the bases, and the Mount cut the deficot to 8-7 when Lindsay Heinze reached on an error as well. Holcomb then singled up the middle to bring home two runs to put the Mount ahead, 9-8.
Amanda Berkley came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order for her first save of the season.
Stetson (5-11) had taken a 5-0 lead after the first two innings of play before the Mount got on the scoreboard in the top of the third on a Stoner RBI single to right field. Stetson got that run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Mount cut into the deficit again with a three-run fourth.
In the fourth, Heinze and Kaia Bonshock singled to put two runners on base, and Emilee Kirk followed with a single up the middle to make the score 6-2. Nines then doubled home Bonshock and Kirk to cut the Stetson lead to 6-4. The Hatters added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 8-4, and set up the Mount's rally in the seventh.
Kirk, Bonshock, Stoner and Holcomb each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the game to pace the Mount offense. Katie Olson picked up the win, allowing two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Avery Neuhart started for the Mount, pitching the first 1.1 innings of the game.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 5, with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman.
