Mount Softball Returns to Action on Saturday


The Mount St. Mary's softball team is back in action this weekend playing in the Hatter Classic at Stetson University starting on Saturday, before heading to Bethune-Cookman for a Tuesday doubleheader.

MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's has an overall record of 3-6 so far in the 2019 season. Morgan Alisaukas (14-30, .467) and Lindsay Heinze (11-27, .407) lead the offense while Amanda Berkley (1-1, 4.20 ERA, 21.2 innings) and Avery Neuhart (1-4, 2.30 ERA, 24.1 innings) lead the pitching staff.

ABOUT STETSON: Stetson has started the 2019 season with a 3-8 record. The Hatters posted a win this past weekend over Louisiana Tech (3-2) at the Spring Games Tournament. Elizabeth Jackson (13-35, .371) and Danielle Diaz (12-24, .500) had strong starts to the season, both adding a pair of hits in the win against Louisiana Tech. Tori Perkins has led the staff with a 2-3 record and a 2.33 ERA in 33 innings of work.

ABOUT NORTH DAKOTA: North Dakota is 5-9 overall this season after going 3-1 this past weekend at the GCU Purple Classic Tournament. They are led by Angel Love (6-13, .461) and Marina Marzolino (7-16, .437), who both had strong performances this past weekend. North Dakota has a strong pitching staff, led by Jannay Jones who has a 3-2 record and a 3.06 ERA in 32 innings pitched.

ABOUT BETHUNE-COOKMAN: Bethune-Cookman has a 4-11 record so far this season, including wins over Virginia and #17 Oregon.  Kaiya Epps-Lee leads the team with a .333 average while Cheyenne Smith is hitting .267.  Victoria Guzman leads the pitching staff with a 3.03 ERA in 39.1 innings of work.

Vs Stetson: Mount St. Mary's is 1-7 all-time against Stetson in the series that began in 2007. The teams first met on February 24, 2012, where the Mount won the first game 1-0, before losing 0-2 on February 25, 2012.

Vs Bethune-Cookman: Mount St. Mary's is 1-5 all-time against Bethune-Cookman. On February 22, 2014, the Mount posted 3-2 win over Bethune-Cookman.  

Vs North Dakota: This will be the first-ever meeting between the Mount and North Dakota.

PRESEASON POLL:  The Mount was tabbed to finish in seventh in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.  Sacred Heart was the unanimous pick to win it all, followed by LIU Brooklyn, Saint Francis U, Central Connecticut, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, the Mount, Wagner and Robert Morris.  The Mount finished tied for sixth in the NEC standings last year with a 7-9 league record.

2018 RECAP:  The Mountaineers posted a 17-26-1 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the Northeast Conference last season.  Morgan Alisauckas led the team with a .316 average while Lindsay Heinze hit .294 with team-highs of 11 doubles and 27 RBI.  Alisauckas and Heinze tied for the team lead with six home runs each.  In the circle, Katie Olson (5-4, 4.20 ERA), Amanda Berkley (7-7, 4.28 ERA) and Jordan Weaver (5-12, 4.88 ERA) all return for the Mount this year.

HEAD COACH ANNA NAGRO:  Nagro begins her ninth season at the helm of the Mount softball program, the longest tenure by a head coach in the history of the program.  Nagro has led the Mount to 37 wins over the past two seasons, including 20 in 2017, the most by a Mount team since the 2010 campaign.

UP NEXT:  The Mount heads to Hampton, Va., for a pair of games on March 7 before facing Morgan State on March 8 and Albany on March 9 at the Pirate-Spartan Classic at Hampton.
