Mount Softball Downed by North Texas and Rhode Island at Elon Tournament

Elon, N.C. (February 17, 2017)—The Mount St. Mary's softball team opened the 2018 season at the Elon Softball Tournament today.  The Mount fell to North Texas, 6-2, in the opening game before falling to Rhode Island, 3-2, in game two.

North Texas 6, Mount St. Mary's 2

The Mount opened the season with a 6-2 loss to North Texas this morning.  Kaylee Stoner went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored to pace the Mount offense while Morgan Alisauckas drove in both runs.

After North Texas took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, the Mount evened the score in the top of the third.  Stoner started the rally with a single to right center field, and then stole second base.  Alisauckas followed with a double to plate Stoner to tie the score at 1-1.

North Texas staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to take control of the game.  With runners on first and second with two outs, a walk loaded the bases for Harley Perella, who singled to drive home a pair of runs.  Kourtney Williams followed with a two-run base hit of her own to make it 5-1.  North Texas added a run in the sixth on a bases loaded walk.

The Mount rounded out the scoring in the top of the seventh when Stoner tripled and then scored on an Alisauckas ground out to second base.

Marian Ruf started for the Mount, allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings of work.  Jordan Weaver allowed an unearned run in three innings of hitless relief.  Ruf, Kate Wade and Emilee Kirk also had hits for the Mount in the game.

Rhode Island 3, Mount St. Mary's 2

Rhode Island scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 3-2 win over the Mount in the second game today.  Morgan Alisauckas and Lindsay Heinze provided the Mount offense with back-to-back home runs in the sixth nning.

Rhode Island took the lead on an Erika Yeager solo home run in the bottom of the fifth that broke a scoreless tie.  The lead was short-lived as the Mount answered with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Alisauckas connected on a solo home run to left center to even the score, and Heinze followed with a solo shot to right center field to put the Mount ahead. 

The Mount maintained the lead to the bottom of the seventh when the Rams loaded the bases with no outs.  The Mount got the first out on a force out at home on a grounder to the pitcher.  Raachel Kuhlman, however, doubled to drive home a pair to give the Rams the win.

Alisauckas finished 2-for-2 with a double and a home run while Shelbee Holcomb was 1-for-3 with a double.  Freshman Amanda Berkley took the loss, allowing three runs in 6.1 innings of work in her first collegiate start. 

The Mount continues the tournament tomorrow with games against Bowling Green and host Elon
