Cleveland, Ohio (March 16, 2019) – Nine swimmers representing the Mount St. Mary's men's and women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up competition at the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational Championship on Saturday night. The Mountaineers broke four school records over the three-day event at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
The Mount St. Mary's men's team finished in 24th place in the team standings. Indiana won team title, while California Baptist University and TCU rounded out the top-three.
On the women's side, Akron was crowned champions, while Rice placed second and Florida International finished in third.
DAY 1 RECAP
The opening day of competition at the National Invitational Championship on Thursday saw three school records fall on the men's side. Will Twizell broke his own record in the 50 breast with a 25.72 in the preliminary heats, which also earned him a spot in the finals. Later that night in the finals heat, Twizell swam a 25.54 to clip his prelim mark and set a new program record while earning a 13th-place finish in the event.
In the 50 back, Jonathan Mata clocked in at 24.04 to eclipse his own school record in the event of 24.22, which he set earlier this season at the Loyola H2ounds Invitational.
The other record to get broken on Thursday came in the 50 free. Peter Jones registered a time of 21.02 to break Brock Cudahy's previous mark of 21.29, which was set at the ECAC Championships in 2017 during the program's inaugural season.
The Mount's 200 free relay squad of Pham, Wilson, Cudahy and de Xavier combined for a time of 1:26.56 to take 20th place overall.
Two other Mountaineers joined Twizell as competitors in the 50 breast. John Wilson registered a time of 26.18, and Cudahy touched the wall in 27.35.
The Mount had three swimmers compete in the 50 fly. Thomas de Xavier was the top finisher for the team with a time of 23.53, while Cudahy clocked in at 23.65 and Mata finished in 23.76.
In the 50 back, Ethan Pham was the lone swimmer to compete for the Mount, and he finished with a time of 25.05.
Maddie McGraw was the lone swimmer to represent the Mount women's team at the championship. The senior swam the 50 back in a time of 26.44, and posted a time of 2:07.13 in the 200 back time trials.
DAY 2 RECAP
On the second day of competition on Friday, the Mount men's team broke another school record, this time coming in relay action. The team of Mata, Twizell, Ryan Carroll and Peter Jones registered a time of 1:31.13 in the 200 medley relay to take 15th place in the event while breaking the old program record of 1:32.96, which was set at the CCSA Championships this season.
Twizell once again recorded the team's top individual finish of the night, swimming to a 15th-place showing in the 100 breast in 55.38. Wilson also swam in the event for the Mount, and posted a time of 57.54.
In the 100 fly, Carroll recorded a time of 50.93.
For the women's team, McGraw touched the wall in 56.74 in the 100 back.
DAY 3 RECAP
On the final day of competition on Saturday, the Mountaineers had three swimmers compete in the 100 IM. Peter Jones posted the team's top time with a 52.75, while Pham clocked in at 53.53 and Wilson registered a time of 53.85.
