The Mountaineers got their first victory of the season over the weekend, posting a 1-0 win over VMI in Emmitsburg to move to 1-4-2 on the year. After a scoreless first half, the Mount got on the board in the 71st minute to take the late lead. Off a set piece, Jonathan Godette sent one into the box and a VMI defender was called for a handball, resulting in a penalty kick for the Mount. Captain Bilal Hassane stepped up and drilled the penalty kick inside the right post for his first goal of the season, giving the Mount the advantage. Just moments after the Mount tally, VMI nearly tied things up on a long strike from Justin Riescher. Off an attempted clearance by Mount St. Mary's, Riescher volleyed one from over 20 yards out that was ticketed for the bottom right corner. Bobby Edwards made an all-out diving save to his left to keep the Keydets off the board and preserve the 1-0 Mount lead. The Mount was able to close out the 1-0 victory, as Edwards finished with four saves in the contest to collect his first shutout with the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary's fired a season-high 17 shots in the match, including 10 in the second half, and outshot VMI 17-14 overall.

With the revival of the program, the 2018 Mount squad features an extremely young group consisting of 16 freshmen. The Mount rookies have accounted for two of the team's four goals and both assists through the opening seven games. Freshmen Jonathan Godette (13 shots) and Yann Kouemi (9) are the team's leaders in shots.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
The Red Storm sit at 4-3-1 through their first eight games this season, with their wins coming against Loyola Marymount, Fairfield, Temple and Seton Hall. Matt Forster (4g, 2a), Skage Simonsen (3g, 2a) and Tani Oluwaseyi (2g, 2a) have accounted for all nine of the team's goals this season.
