MOUNT ST. MARY'S (0-3-2) vs. ARMY WEST POINT (2-2-1)
Saturday, September 15 | 7:00 p.m.
Emmitsburg, Md. | Waldron Family Stadium
The Mountaineers earned their second straight draw last time out, playing to a 1-1 tie with Howard on Wednesday night to move to 0-3-2 overall this season. Freshman Gavin Shirley put the Mount out in front in the 10th minute with his first collegiate goal. The rookie sent a thru ball to Yann Kouemi that was broken up by Howard goalie Carlos Caro on a slide. The ball took a fortunate bounce right back to Shirley inside the box, and he headed it home to give the Mount a 1-0 advantage. Howard was able to even the score in the 63rd minute on Victor Guirma's third goal of the season. Andres Gomez fired a long shot from around 30 yards out that was stopped by a diving Bobby Edwards. The rebound trickled right to Guirma on the doorstep, and the senior slid it into the empty net to knot things up at 1-1. Neither team found the go-ahead goal in the remainder of regulation or the two overtime periods, as the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
On a very young Mount St. Mary's team, freshmen have accounted for six of the team's eight points thus far this season. Rookies Gavin Shirley and Elias Ordonez have a goal apiece, while Junior Joel Tshiani, who scored in the team's draw at American University, is the lone upperclassmen to get on the board through the opening five games. Mount goalie Bobby Edwards has earned all five starts in goal, and ranks third in the Northeast Conference in saves per game (4.2).
