Emmitsburg, Md. (December 12, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team announced its schedule for the 2019 season on Wednesday. The 15-game slate includes four games against opponents that earned berths to last season's NCAA Tournament.
"Overall, our 2019 schedule is solid and very challenging both in and out of conference. It will challenge our players to remain focused from start to finish. Our student-athletes must employ discipline and commitment if they want to be successful and accomplish our season goal of making the Northeast Conference Playoffs," said Head Coach Tom Gravante, who is in his 24th season at the helm of the Mount men's lacrosse program.
The Mount opens the 2019 campaign with a home game against Delaware on February 9 at Waldron Family Stadium. The matchup will mark the fourth straight season that the teams have faced off in the season opener.
The Mountaineers' next two games are against a pair of Baltimore area schools, as they take on Towson at home on February 15, before traveling to UMBC for their first road game on February 23. Last season, the Mount recorded its first-ever win over UMBC in 19 meeting with the Retrievers since moving to Division I.
On February 26, the Mountaineers face their first opponent that appeared in last season's NCAA Tournament, as they welcome in reigning Big East Champion, Georgetown. The tilt between the Mount and Georgetown will mark the 17th straight season that the two teams have played.
A pair of road games at VMI (Mar. 2) and Richmond (Mar. 5) kick off the month of March for the Mount. The team owns a 21-2 all-time record against VMI, and will look to capture its first-ever win over Richmond, which is coming off a Southern Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018.
Following a contest at home against Mercer (Mar. 8), the Mount heads to Baltimore to take on reigning Big Ten Champion Johns Hopkins (Mar. 12) in what will be the seventh meeting between the two schools and first since 2014.
The Mountaineers kick off conference play with games against the league's top-two teams. They battle Bryant at home (March 16), before traveling to Robert Morris to take on the Colonials (Mar. 23), who claimed the NEC Title last season.
After a home game against Sacred Heart on March 30 to close out the month, the Mount travels out West to finish out its non-conference slate with a contest against first-year program Utah on April 6.
The Mount resumes NEC play with road matchups at Wagner (Apr. 13) and Hobart (Apr. 20), before closing out the regular season at home vs. Saint Joseph's (Apr. 27).
Mount St. Mary's returns 42 players from last year's squad, including the team's top-10 point leaders. Chris DiPretoro (37g), Stephano Mastro (27), and Brenden McCarthy (21) are the Mount's top-three returning goal scorers from the 2018 campaign.
