Men’s Lacrosse Hits the Road for Matchup at No. 18/19 Towson

The Mountaineers opened the 2018 campaign last Saturday, falling at Delaware by a 16-12 final. The Mount held a four-goal advantage late in the second quarter before three Delaware tallies in the final two minutes of the half cut the Mount lead to 7-6 at the break. The Blue Hens were able to grab an 11-10 lead with the final goal of the third quarter, and outscored the Mount 5-2 in the final period to walk away with the victory.

Brenden McCarthy, Stephano Mastro and Luke Frankeny led the way for the Mount with two goals apiece in the tilt, while Chris DiPretoro, Jack Mangan and Joe Bethke each added a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Matt Vierheller stopped 12 of 28 shots on net in the contest.

The Tigers, coming off an NCAA Semifinal appearance last season, currently hold the No. 18 ranking in the latest Nike/USILA Coaches' Poll, and the No. 19 ranking in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverik Media Poll. Towson dropped its season opener at 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 14-6, last Saturday. Midfielder Jon Mazza led the squad with one goal and one assist in the game. Shane Brennan got the start in net, making four stops and allowing 11 goals one half of play.

The Mount and Towson will faceoff for the ninth time in series history on Saturday. The Tigers have won all eight of the previous meetings, including a 13-5 victory last season. Chris DiPretoro led the Mount with a pair of goals in the matchup last year.

The Mount continues its road swing with a matchup at Richmond on February 20 at 4 p.m.
